Icons, Illustration, Animation, & Automation

From Icon to Illustration

Expanding on an existing icon set, I organized a library that could be easily pulled from and remixed to create new icons or larger illustrations. This system took pressure off the design team to constantly create new assets for marketing and allowed for quicker turnaround.

Bringing Icons to Life

Vimeo is a platform based on video, so it was only natural to bring motion to our illustrations. I added simple looping movements to the icons which could also be used to create larger animated compositions.

From daily to done—using Photoshop actions to automate production work

One of my daily tasks at Vimeo was to create GIFs from the Staff Picked videos to post on social media. To avoid wasting time on such a repetative task, I made a set of Photoshop actions.

The Setup

The red dots on the right indicate the steps that would normally be taken to create an asset for a Staff Pick video: a lot. The blue bars on the left indicate the steps taken when using Photoshop actions: 3. This cut production time from ~15 minutes per video to ~2.

It wasn’t completely automated, as it still needed some manual decision making: whether the gif needed a Staff Pick badge (SP), a Staff Pick Premiere (SPP) badge, or just the Vimeo logo. However, it got rid of a lot of extra clicks and the need to punch in dimension numbers. It was also easier to batch rename files.

So instead of spending ~1.25 hours making GIFs, I only needed ~10 minutes
